Definition of a green job

The job is defined as green if:

  • It is in companies that produce goods or services that benefit the environment or conserve natural resources. The definition covers companies that reduce energy and raw material consumption, limit greenhouse gas emissions, minimise waste and pollution, protect and restore ecosystems, or enable companies and communities to adapt to climate change.
  • It also covers jobs where the tasks are related to increasing the environmental friendliness of a product, process, or service, or reducing the use of natural resources.

Sustainable societies start with people

We always strive to find the best talent

Since 1998, our goal has been to create a culture where people feel energised, are encouraged to curiosity, and are supported and cared for by one another. We strive for success in business, but we also want to positively impact people, the planet, and society. We enable both individuals and companies to fully leverage their potential to achieve a better and more sustainable future.

Your green skills are needed

According to the World Economic Forum, the green transition could create 30 million jobs globally by 2030. Clean energy, energy efficiency, and low-emission technologies are key. The demand for green skills is growing significantly faster than the number of people proficient in them. Between 2022 and 2023, the share of expertise in the green transition grew by 12.3%, but the share of job advertisements requiring green skills increased by 22.4%. Simply put, there are not enough skilled people to fill the open positions, and the situation is the same across all industries, including those that are carbon-intensive. Globally, only one employee in eight possesses green skills. Your green skills are needed!

"Are you interested in doing work that has a positive impact on the environment? Dare to set requirements for your future employer

Markus Åberg föreläser

Recruiting is a mutual process – perhaps now more than ever. With a new conscious generation, it is no longer just about the job seeker making themselves attractive to the employer, but also about companies making themselves attractive to the right people.

Markus Åberg has worked in the recruiting industry since 2008 and has done a lot of work in building employer image. Since 2017, he has served as the head of the talent advisory team at academic work, focusing on increasingly strategic questions about what kind of workforce will be needed in the future. This is an important question in a time when change is happening faster than ever before.

What makes a job attractive?

Through the Young Professional Attraction Index (ypai) study, academic work asks early career professionals which companies they would prefer to work for and what makes an employer attractive. Markus collaborates with companies to create a space where job seekers and companies can meet.

"I work closely with my clients so that they know what changes they need to make in their operations or communication to attract the right individuals to their organisation," says Markus. He emphasises, however, that saying the right things is not enough to attract the right candidates.

"It's not just about getting people to sign a contract, but about making the necessary changes so that they also stay with the company. This is the guidance my team and i offer," he says.

What is most important to you as a job seeker?

At academic work, the individual is at the centre. Unlike other studies with predetermined questions, ypai is not based on fixed questions. Interviewees do not have to evaluate attractive workplaces based on pre-named companies. They do not have to assess what they are looking for in an employer based on predefined categories. Ypai starts with the question, "what is most important to you?".

In recent years, the answers from the studies have shown that it is important to candidates that companies are innovative. This does not surprise Markus at all.

"A company that is looking for new innovative solutions is a company that has a long-term plan. And that secures the future of its operations," says Markus. "And this is high on the list for young job seekers in finland."

The research shows that young people care about what they do daily and how it affects the bigger picture. Not just their individual contribution, but also what the company they work for represents and how they collectively impact the world around them. "... if you find the right job, you are even willing to compromise a bit on salary," says Markus.

Dare to set requirements for your job

Job seekers in the young professionals category are a conscious generation, for whom a responsible mindset comes naturally. Of course, it varies slightly to what extent they want to work in sustainability. Some want to dedicate their entire career to sustainability and see themselves working in an organisation that actively strives to save the world. Others, in turn, just want to make sure that their daily work does not cause harm.

"Companies that make the ypai listing have proven to be attractive employers in the things that make them appealing workplaces. By looking at the list, young job seekers can see how their future workplaces rank on the issues that are important to them," Markus explains.

"If, on the other hand, you are specifically looking for a green job in a company or role where you can do positive things specifically regarding environmental issues – we have compiled the open positions that meet the requirements under a special category, which we call a green job!"

For those who want to find a responsible path in their career, it is important to know how to distinguish words and deeds. Markus encourages everyone entering working life to ask questions during the interview.

"Dare to challenge your employer and make sure they have good answers. What is their plan for the green transition? Ask what they are doing for the climate and how your contribution will promote it," says Markus.

In his opinion, this is a very relevant question that yields different answers from every employer. Answers you need to feel that you have ended up in a company that shares your values.
